What to Expect
Welcome to Fort StreeT
Presbyterian Church
Located in downtown Detroit at the
corner of Fort and Third,
Fort Street Presbyterian Church
draws together people from
across southeast Michigan
to serve, worship and connect with
God, the city and one another.
Fort Street Presbyterian Church welcomes everyone,
and we celebrate the
diversity of races, ethnicities, economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities,
and theological persuasions
in our congregation!

What do I wear? It really doesn’t matter. You’ll see some people dressed up a bit, while others are in more casual clothes. Some of our members are homeless and they come as they are. Everyone is welcome alongside everyone else.
Music: Most of our worship is traditional in format, with classical music and hymns sung by the congregation, a choir of 10-15 people, and organ music. Other styles of music, including spirituals and occasionally jazz, also are featured from time to time.
Communion: On the second Sunday of the month we serve Communion. In the Presbyterian Church, all are welcome to participate — young or old, saint or sinner, U of M fan, or Michigan State fan.
Coffee Hour: After worship, you are invited to join us for Coffee Hour — a sharing of sweet treats, savory food, coffee, and conversation. Since Fort Streeters come from the entire metro area — often driving 30-plus minutes to get here — we tend to stick around to enjoy each other’s company and make new friends.
Our worship style
Fort Street worships every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The service usually lasts 60-70 minutes. When you come, you’ll receive a printed “Order of Service” bulletin, so you can follow along and participate throughout the hour of worship.
The service includes:
A time for children (those who wish, can come up front in the sanctuary), during which they hear a story and can say a prayer.
A time of collective prayer that includes sharing prayer requests, as a microphone is passed around.
A 15- to 20-minute sermon from the Pastor. You can listen to some sermons here.
Singing. Lots of singing.
Late arrivals — Fort Streeters aren’t a particularly punctual bunch. 😊

Becoming a Member?
Are you or someone you know interested in joining Fort Street Presbyterian as a member? If so, we would like to begin an online class by Zoom in the next few weeks. In this class, you will learn more about the history of Fort Street, what it means to be Presbyterian, and discuss how faith plays a role in your life. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Sarah or Pastor Garrett.
