What We Believe
Fort Street Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest Reformed denomination in the United States. The history of our denomination began in the 16th century under the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), a leader in the Protestant Reformation, whose thoughts were shaped by many of the reformers who came before him.
The key beliefs of the Presbyterian Church are:
The sovereignty of God. God is the supreme authority throughout the universe.
The authority of Scripture. Our knowledge of God and God’s purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ.
Justification by grace through faith. Our salvation (justification) through Jesus is God’s generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments.
The priesthood of all believers. It is everyone’s job — ministers and lay people alike — to share this Good News with the whole world. That is also why the Presbyterian church is governed at all levels by a combination of clergy and laity, men and women alike.
More information on the beliefs of the Presbyterian Church (USA) may be found here.
With these touchstones based in our tradition, Fort Street Presbyterian Church is a welcoming community with a wide variety of personal practices and theological beliefs. People from across the spectrum of theology have found Fort Street to be their spiritual home.
