Give the Magic of Music for Generations to come.

For nearly 150 years, Fort Street Presbyterian Church has provided "a spiritual beacon in Downtown Detroit." Never has this light shone more brightly than through the church's fine tradition of sacred and serious music, shared with the community-at-large. Your gift or bequest to the Fort Street Presbyterian Church Music Endowment will help secure the continuation and growth of the performing arts and special music ministries at Fort Street, including:

  • Handel's Messiah - Since 1979, more than 25,000 people have experienced firsthand the miracle of Handel's Messiah performed annually by the nationally acclaimed Fort Street Chorale and Chamber Orchestra with some of the area's finest soloists.
  • Swift Memorial Organ - The chance to perform on Fort Street's world-class Swift Memorial Organ has brought Detroit such artists as Virgil Fox, E. Power Biggs, Hector Olivera, and Peter Hurford.
  • Chorale and Organ Concerts - Several times a year, music lovers from across the Midwest congregate in the majestic, historic Fort Street sanctuary to hear Chorale and Organ concerts featuring in addition to Handel's sacred oratorio, works ranging from Bach's Mass in B minor to Honegger's King David, from Buxtehude's Prelude and Fugue to Messiaen's La Nativité.
  • Holiday Music Programs - Thousands of worshipers drawn to Fort Street on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas eve experience glorious holiday fare such as Dubois' Seven Last Words of Christ, Fauré's Requiem and John Rutter's carols.
  • Every Sunday Worship Music - In addition to the Chorale and Organ, musical offerings from the Worship Choir, the Men's Chorus, and the Children's Choir regularly enhance the Fort Street experience.

Operating expenses for performances outside of regular worship and for future organ improvements and repair are not part of the church budget. These programs must be self-supporting. Hence, sufficient funds must be generated each year to ensure that the caliber of the following season's repertoire and fine artists can be financially sustained.

The Music Endowment is designed to do just this. Such a strengthened financial base--incorporating the Chorale Fund, the Organ Fund, and non-budgeted church music expenses will enable the church to confidently plan, provide and expand the programs which both congregation and community have come to expect at Fort Street.

Please consider making a donation today! If contributing by check, please write your check payable to Fort Street Presbyterian Church and indicate on the memo line that your contribution is for the Music Endowment. You may also designate that your contribution go specifically to the Chorale Fund or the Organ Fund, if so desired.
